Anyone who expects the city of Coron on Busuanga Island in the northernmost part of the province of Palawan is a small, sparsely populated, quiet resort with a few resorts for divers is too late.

A few years ago, Coron best known among sport divers for its shipwrecks, but today it is a noisy, traffic carpet sparkling, expansive “booming-town” with an ever-increasing tourism in line with the expansion of air and boat traffic, which locks in visitors from Manila or Puerto Princessa on the main island of Palawan.

When I arrived with a small boat from El Nido was fully booked on several of the guest houses built some distance out into the dirty shallow water on piers, piles and wooden pier in the harbor colorful environment in which older slums and newer buildings are mixed.

But there are plenty of accommodation in every price range and one can choose from small rooms with only fans and shared bathrooms to small new builded hotels with air conditioning. A short distance west of town are several resorts with high standards and nearby islands have resorts on white sand beaches.

I got at least half an hour’s search for shelter affordable price in a large room in a magnificent private villa, where “Nanay the Coron,” an elderly woman who spoke decent English was hospitable hostess a few days.

Some of the others that came with the boat found shelter after some wandering in the narrow harbor walkways, which was darker than normal due to power outages. Relatively inexpensive accommodations including Oriental Lodge, Krystal Lodge, Kokosnuss Garden Resort, Sea Breeze Lodge, or in Swedish Patrik & Tess Guesthouse. Just to mention some of the most common for backpackers. For more information and facts will then under the heading Places/Palawan/Busuanga/ above.

When I am a week later returned to Coron after a trip to the society Concepcion on the island’s west coast, I booked a room for 500 pesos in one of the hotels, the yellow right new, which is east of the bus station, next to the large filled harbor plan, the city’s development area and soon learn to be built.

The city of Coron in itself is not so much to offer anyone looking nature or beach, in addition to the hot springs a quarter of a trip to the East or a sweaty hike 650 steps up the Tapyas Hill to enjoy the view. There are day trips by boat in force, guided tours to the nearby dramatically steep Coron Island, with limestone mountains, lakes and lagoons, snorkeling in the colorful coral reefs, wreck diving or swimming with white beaches at some of the paradise islands in the short or long distances.

After a few days in Coron, I was at least enough of the traffic noise – which is unnecessary because all motorcycles running with bad muffler to maximize engine power – and took a bus-like truck transportation to the town of Concepcion an hour’s drive west.

Now, of course, it took almost two hours because the bus except for the maximum amount of passengers transported also rice, rebar, chipboard, vegetables, and more to and from various places along the way. Some of the passengers on board had waited an hour and a half in the warm bus before it rolled away from Corona after a change of two tires.

The first leg was along a nice concrete road – excluding a number of bridges in surprisingly poor condition, which is then switched to road construction (only small-scale concrete work without machines) before we went to shake out on a read dirt road.

Got in the end of the small tranquil resort of Concepcion, where I was going to stay one night before continuing westward journey through the west, small, capital of Salvacion. But felt so good in the leafy relaxed and society (a bit like Coron 10-15 years ago, I heard) that I stayed there over a week.
